Pelvic floor dysfunction affects the muscles that control bowel/bladder and sexual function. Impairments in length, strength, endurance and tone may lead to pelvic pain, pain with intercourse, incontinence and a number of other problems. Common conditions include incontinence, urgency/frequency, vulvodynia, vestibulitis, interstitial cystitis, pudendal neuralgia, pain with intercourse (dyspareunia), bowel dysfunction, coccygodynia and sacroiliac joint dysfunction.
The childbearing years bring a number of rapid changes to the body, the potential for pain and functional limitations. Postpartum instruction in exercise progression is often helpful and sometimes necessary to allow women to return to their pre-baby level of function.
