What to Expect on Your First Visit
We've put together some answers to questions that we hear frequently from patients when they are first coming to visit one of our clinics, including a little information about why we're different, how we work with your physician, how you should dress for the visit, and what, generally, to expect.
How is Specialized Physical Therapy different than other physical therapy and massage therapy practices?
The therapists at Specialized Physical Therapy approach healing from a whole-body perspective. We are not just interested in helping the client alleviate pain, but also in finding the underlying cause of the pain.
Pain reduction is a primary objective. However, many pain patterns will eventually recur if you don't look to change the underlying factors that are contributing to either the origination of the pain or in maintaining the pain pattern.
Client education is an ongoing part of the therapy process. The manual therapy techniques are important for restoring balance and correcting musculoskeletal misalignments. They also help bring and restore awareness to compromised areas.
Muscle re-education, through stretching, strengthening, posture and body mechanics correction, is also an essential component in a good long term prognosis.
Do I need a doctor’s prescription before I receive therapy?
As of July 1, 2024, depending on your specific insurance plan, and diagnosis, a physician’s prescription may not be required. Patients on Medicare and insurance plans requiring prior authorization for treatment will need a physician prescription for therapy. Please contact our office for more information or confirmation.
How much will my physical therapy cost?
Cost varies based on your insurance plan and co-pay. Please contact us for more information about rates and accepted insurance plans.
What do I wear to physical therapy?
At Specialized Physical Therapy, we use a whole-body treatment approach called Myofascial Release. For this to work effectively, we need to be able to have skin-to-skin contact as much as is possible and appropriate. Because this is a whole-body approach, we may be looking at other parts of your body and fascial system to see if other restrictions are contributing to your pain, even if your pain seems to be occurring in a specific location.
For men, we ask that you wear loose fitting shorts without a shirt.
For women, we ask that you wear something that you would feel comfortable moving in, but that exposes the skin. We do have hospital gowns that we also offer to all our female patients, as needed.
We respect any special considerations that may arise and encourage you to speak to your therapists if you have any more specific questions or concerns about what to wear to therapy.
