What is Fascia?
The human body is interwoven with a web-like structure of connective tissue called “fascia”. This fascial system serves as a protective layer surrounding your muscles, bones, blood vessels, nerves, and organs. It eases motion by helping each part of your musculoskeletal system slide smoothly, and it enables these systems to communicate with each other.
Unfortunately, it’s also fairly easy for your fascia to become distorted or adhesed, resulting in a variety of symptoms such as pain, discomfort, stiffness and reduced range of motion. Because this framework of tissue is so interconnected throughout your body, you can easily imagine that any irregularity within your fascia, if not addressed, can quickly create a whole host of painful issues!
This is where myofascial release comes in. Myofascial release, sometimes referred to as MFR, is a therapeutic practice that works to correct these problems within your fascia, thereby reducing or eliminating your painful symptoms. It focuses specifically on the fascial system, which responds differently to treatment than muscles and joints do and therefore requires a different approach.
